Five programmes to watch on Netflix and practise your Spanish!

Netflix is a great tool for language learning – with a click of a button you have thousands of Spanish TV programmes at your fingertips, ready and waiting to be watched! Personally, I usually turn on Spanish subtitles whilst watching as it helps increase my understanding of the more subtle plot twists, but of course do as you please! Hundreds of Latin American TV series are available, as well as those produced here in Spain.
See below for some of my recommendations – enjoy!
1. Bajo Sospecha
Were you, along with so many other Brits (!), glued to your screens for each and every episode of Broadchurch? This is the series for you! Just after celebrating her First Communion, a young girl disappears and is nowhere to be found. Who is responsible and where is the girl?! A pair of detectives go undercover to find out the truth and encounter a village wracked with secrets and lies. There are eight episodes in the first series and if you don’t have Netflix, no worries! ‘Bajo Sospecha’ is also available in AtresPlayer.
2. Chicas del Cable
Set in the 1920s, this series tells the story of four young women working as telephone operators in Madrid. It turns out that one of the girls, Alba (played by Blanca Suárez) has got the job under somewhat false pretences… But why? And will the others find out? Only the first series is available on Netflix right now, and I’m on tenterhooks waiting for the second!
3. Palmeras en la nieve
This film tells the story of a Spanish boy, Kilian, who was born in Guinea and returns to Africa in 1953, just as the colonial system is breaking down. Kilian is extremely respectful to the inhabitants of the island – the total opposite of his brother, a racist misogynist. With a sudden flash-forward to the modern day, we meet Kilian’s niece. She stumbles across an old letter from this unknown land and decides to go to Guinea to find out for herself why Kilian is sending money to a family living on the island.
Fran and Alina are a young couple living life to the max! She wants to have children, but he’s more than happy with his day-to-day life. However… they find out that due to Fran’s low sperm count if they want children – it’s now or never! What will they decide?
5. Perdiendo el norte
Hugo and Braulio, two ambitious young Spaniards fresh out university, find themselves unemployed in the height of a deep recession and decide to go to Berlin to get a decent job. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as easy as they thought it would be! On their first day in Germany they meet Carla, who turns out to be their new flatmate – what are the chances! Even though they don’t get on with each other at the start, Hugo and Carla they end up falling in love… But who’s Nadia and why has she come to Berlin?
